Careful planning and collaboration can ensure multiple objectives are addressed during the design of a material handling system.
Cross-traffic, worker safety, equipment preservation, and better management of order packing were concerns expressed before the re-design of this large, regional distribution center. The new design had to incorporate radio frequency technology already in use.
Changes to every area of the facility needed to be incorporated and all changes would have to be made during normal production hours, without affecting service. Storage and picking of non-conveyable products were to be accommodated in the final design.
The Siggins system design placed small product in a multi-level picking module serviced by conveyor. Non-conveyable product was located in a zoned module, limiting the need for fork trucks. Special areas with cantilever and reel racking were created to house conduit and wire products, and a packing cluster was created, allowing order separation by category.
Wider aisles, racking protection, and traffic flow management all create a safer work environment.
