Voice directed warehousing (also known as voice directed picking) utilizes voice synthesis and speech recognition software to aid in fulfillment processes for warehouses and distribution centers. Developed in the late 1990s, voice direction usage has increased rapidly over the following years due to major technology advances and gradually decreasing hardware and software costs.
Workers using voice direction usually wear a small headset/earpiece combined with a lightweight, wearable computer that provides instructions via audible prompts. At the completion of any given task, the worker can then confirm using pre-defined voice commands and codes before moving on to the next item.
Voice direction usually takes the place of paper picking lists or hand-held scanning devices, and in many cases it can also be used for receiving and replenishment applications.
Some of the main benefits of voice directed systems include:
- Improved accuracy
- Greater productivity
- Fewer distractions
- Less training
- More job satisfaction
- Less waste from document printing
- Increased customer satisfaction
